Get to know Edith

How long have you been practising law, and how long have you been with Fee Langstone?

I was admitted in September 2016 and joined Fee Langstone in October 2020.  In the intervening years I practised commercial litigation at a specialist firm.

If you weren’t a lawyer, what do you think you’d be doing?

In a dream world, chief ice cream taster for Duck Island.  More realistically, I always loved the idea of teaching.  One of the most important skills in law is being able to distil a principle down to its core and explain it.  I think teaching is the same.

What do you think sets Fee Langstone apart from other firms?

There is such a wealth of experience and knowledge in all areas of insurance law held by the firm.  In addition, there is a huge willingness for this knowledge to be shared.  Whenever I come across a difficult issue, there is always someone who has experience in that area and can offer guidance.  The dogs in the office are pretty nice too.

What makes insurance law different from other areas of practice?

I think that insurance law is contractual law in its most pure form which is really exciting.  I’ve also been enjoying the huge range of matters I have been working on.  The law can feel quite insular so it is also great to work alongside experts from different fields and learn from them.  I have definitely picked up a few building skills (theoretical of course) from some of the matters I have dealt with.

What are three things still left on your bucket list?

1.      Ride Alpe d’Huez.

2.      Eat the degustation at Noma.

3.      Do a muscle up.

If you could have any superpower what would it be and why?

I feel like there is always a catch with this question!!  But probably flying – it seems the most unproblematic and it would be nice to cut down on my carbon footprint.

What’s your favourite music? What’s your go-to karaoke song?

Over the course of the day I will switch from MF Doom to Radiohead and then to Boney M with zero hesitation.  It’s a chaotic listening experience.  But I always finish off the day with RNZ Concert.

For Karaoke, though, I’m very basic and love to belt out some Abba.

If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would you choose?

If this is limited to living people then obviously RuPaul!  Truly one of the most interesting people alive. For historical characters, I am obsessed with ancient history so it would have to be Alexander the Great.
